About our operation

97 years and almost 1,000 ships later

We began in 1929 with an assignment from the Swedish Parliament to renew the Swedish merchant fleet by providing good financing. To date, we have financed more almost 1,000 vessels and currently have around 130 vessels financed across all maritime sectors.

Our assignment in brief

Our operation is governed by a Swedish law, the Act on Svenska Skeppshypotekskassan. We fulfil our purpose by financing the renewal of the merchant fleet, mainly for Swedish shipping companies, but also for foreign shipping companies with a significant Swedish influence or interest.

As a financial institution, the value we provide to shipping with a significant Swedish interest or influence, has become increasingly evident since the financial crisis and the introduction of new capital market regulations. Access to loan capital has drastically decreased as banks and other financial institutions have left the market. Our role as lender, guarantor, discussion partner and advisor has been strengthened and is thus increasingly important for shipping.

The Board

The Government appoints Svenska Skeppshypotek’s Board of Directors and auditors on an annual basis, and discharges the Board from liability.
